All flashlights have at least three modes - flashlight, floodlight or both. Using both at once gives the most illumination, casting light ahead, while “shedding some light” up close. A typical -and regular - scenario would be walking/running at night. One needs to see the path far ahead, but also needs to see the next few steps. Using both light modes at once, the flashlight doesn’t have to be alternated from close to far away. Another typical scenario - a routine traffic stop by an officer. Light is needed to constantly keep an eye inside the stopped vehicle, but is also needed to read documents, licenses, etc. Using both modes on the flashlight, an officer can stay on top of what’s happening. Both modes on at once is not always ideal. On most Nightsticks, using the flashlight only gives brighter output than when the floodlight is on at the same time, and vice versa. Floodlight mode gives a softer and wider throw of light, best for wide area illumination, where the harsher light of the flashlight beam is too intense.
